Nipmuc Youth Baseball League Information

Cal Ripken Divisions

Single A:  ages 4-6  (or Pre-K & Kindergarten)

Ballplayers learn hitting and fielding fundamentals in a supportive team environment.  Young athletes hit the ball from a batting tee which is height-adjusted for a level swing, batting in order through the line-up for the entire game.  The primary goal is to begin to instruct young players in the fundamentals of baseball in a supportive team environment.

Teams will be scheduled to get together 2x per week. One weeknight for practice, and once on Saturdays for games. The weeknight practices are held on the same day, time and location each week. Saturday game times can vary slightly and are held at Grady Field in Mendon, MA..  Spring season only (no summer season).

Double A:  ages 7-8  (or 1st & 2nd grades)

This division makes use of a combination of coach pitch and kid pitch.

Teams will play 2 games per week. One during the week (on either Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday), and one on Saturdays. All games are played at the VFW Small field in Upton, MA. Additional practices may be scheduled by each team's coach, at their discretion.

The summer season will feature games played against surrounding towns.

Minors:  ages 9-10  (or 3rd & 4th grades)

Players continue to build and refine their fundamental skills while beginning to understand game strategy and teamwork. The games are played on 46’ (pitching distance) x 60’ (base paths) diamonds and include umpires calling the games.

Spring season includes interleague games against other Nipmuc Youth Baseball teams.  Sometimes games include teams from our Cal Ripken District (Douglas, Milford, Northbridge, Sutton & Uxbridge) and other surrounding towns (Hopedale, Blackstone, etc.)

Games are generally six innings and include pitching rules to limit the number of pitches a player can throw along with playing rules for other players (continuous batting order, playing time, limited stealing rules, etc.)  League guidelines are contained in a separate document.

Majors:  ages 11-12  (or 5th & 6th grades)

The most experienced level of Cal Ripken Baseball is played under Official Baseball Rules, but implements some special rules as necessary for the development and welfare of this young age group.  The games are played on 50' x 70' diamond with patched umpires and are intended to prepare the players for moving to the big diamond (Babe Ruth).  Some of the major differences include leading, unlimited stealing, dropped 3rd strike, etc.

SUMMER SEASON allows for multiple options (Please note, In order for players to be eligible for Ripken and Sizzler teams, players must have played in the prior spring season with NYB.  All players are invited to play town ball)

Ripken All Stars – Most competitive. Teams will play on the Ripken tournaments trail (Districts, States, Regionals, World Series) and will also play in various local tournaments played on weekends. Season wraps up near end of July.

Sizzler – Competitive. Teams play in a summer long tournament in either Hopkinton (Sizzler). The games are played during the week but may include some weekend games. Season wraps up by mid-July.

Town Ball – Least competitive. Teams play against other surrounding towns with the games played during the week.

FALL SEASON is a chance for the kids “moving up” in the spring to get some experience on the field and in games before the spring season and also allows for the players entering their second year to get more experience as well. Games are played against surrounding town teams. The competition of this level has been mixed.

Recreational spring program for kids of all skill levels.  Games are primarily on weekends with some light travel to local towns.   Games are played primarily on the weekends, however there may also be one weeknight game a week.
